Last month I had the opportunity to meet Cheryl Wadlington at an event in the city. As we chatted about my goals to help young girls with their self-esteem, she told me that is her mission and now she is super excited to release her book, The DivaGirl’s Guide to Style and Self-Respect. From our talk, I hoped this would be exactly what teenage girls need to boost their confidence and show them how to get through their teenage years. Since our conversation, I couldn’t wait for Ms. Cheryl to send me a copy of this much anticipated book. I was super anxious to see if this could be the “go-to” book for urban teenage girls. Well, it was worth the wait…
The DivaGirl’s Guide to Style and Self-Respect by Cheryl Ann Wadlington is referred to as “the quintessential urban etiquette book for today’s girl on the go.” You may say, well we’ve seen these books before. However, what makes The DivaGirl’s Guide different is the language and topics discussed. As I read through the chapters, I did not feel that Wadlington was preaching, but more so having a girl-to-girl conversation of I’ve been where you are, I understand what you face as a teenage girl, let’s come up with some ways to overcome your fears. For example, Ms. Cheryl shared one of the most important lessons she learned, “It’s OK to fall. Just get back up and keep on strutting,” which is the DivaGirl’s mantra to live by.
Before getting to Chapter 1, Ms. Cheryl gives character traits of a DivaGirl vs. an ordinary girl. Without giving them all away, a DivaGirl works the room while an ordinary girl hangs on the wall. A DivaGirl cultivates real friends while an ordinary girl settles for anybody being her friend. What a powerful way to open the book! This allows the reader to do a self evaluation, which will encourage her to put into action what she reads going forward.
Another aspect of The DivaGirl’s Guide to Style and Self-Respect is the “Just Like You” feature. Just Like You consist of questions from other teen girls that are answered by an all-star panel, such as Grammy Award-Winning singer, Monica. This is an important aspect because it shows the reader that she is not alone on the journey to womanhood. The panel covers a variety of questions from how to shop on a budget to keeping a boyfriend interested without sex. Ms. Cheryl is also inspiring teen girls by encouraging entrepreneurship through sharing stories of other girls who are creating jewelry, starting dance academies and making animal balloons. More importantly, her focus is getting girls to start saving money at a young age and giving them tips on being professional.
Ms. Cheryl shares in the book… “People will be willing to invest in you if you are willing to invest in yourself.” I believe any girl that reads this book and take a moment to look in the mirror will benefit. Not only is The DivaGirl’s Guide to Style and Self-Respect a book, it’s also a journal. Each chapter has open-ended questions that will help the reader embrace who she is instead of focusing on seeing herself through the eyes of other people. Ms. Cheryl raises questions like… What absolutely excites you? What is the thing that drives you crazy about yourself? Then, she says FLIP IT “Try seeing how the negative things you don’t like about yourself or your life could be turned into something positive.”
With all that Ms. Cheryl dishes on about style, money, relationships, self-respect and health she still keeps it current when speaking on etiquette. In the days of being surrounded by technology she leaves room to discuss issues like body language, when and when not to use text language (LOL/BFF) and what should not be shared on social media sites.
Overall, I was filled with joy reading this book because finally somebody has got it right. Ms. Cheryl realizes that girls just need someone to understand what they are going through, but more importantly giving them an outlet to reflect and grow. If you have any teenage girls in your life, The DivaGirl’s Guide to Style and Self-Respect is the perfect gift that they can use over and over again.
