Ask D&D

Posted by DeAnna on Jul 28, 2011 in Blog | One Comment

Q: I am an 18 year old student. I started designing and sewing at a young age. Can you help me with guidelines/ways on how to get my designs and label known…?

A: Social networks and the Internet in general has made it a lot easier to reach people from all walks of life. I would suggest you set up a blog or website to showcase your designs. If you don’t already have a twitter and FB account for your brand, that’s a must. Start tweeting and FB photos of your designs and direct your followers back to your website.  Let your designs do the talking!

Crush It by Gary Vaynerchuk would be a great book for you to read. Gary explains how to build and maintain an online community around your brand.

STYLd Spotlight: Anthony Williams

Posted by DeAnna on Jul 27, 2011 in Blog, Fashion | 4 Comments

If you follow A STYLd LIFE on twitter I’m sure you’ve seen me tweeting about the fashion on VH1′s Single Ladies (honestly, the only reason I watch). Last night I said to myself I have to google the stylist, because Val ‘s (Stacey Dash) wardrobe is OUT OF THIS WORLD!

Well to my surprise, I HAVE SEEN THIS FACE BEFORE…. have you?

Anthony L. Williams from season 7 of Project Runway!!! I was so excited to see this because the moment I seen his first design I thought, AMAZING! Anthony not only stood out because of his designs on Project Runway but he had such a bubbly personality which made the judges laugh when they wanted to be serious. Anthony won one of the best challenges on Project Runway, to design a dress for Heidi Klum to wear on the cover of Marie Claire.

I guess you can’t say winners take all…I haven’t heard about the winner from season 7 but Anthony is doing the darn thing on Single Ladies as Stacey Dash’s stylist.

Anthony creates most of Stacey’s looks by combining vintage pieces such as the white cutout vintage Thierry Muglier dress.

My ultimate fav was the pink bow top and green skirt cut from Carolina Herrera fabric.

With talks of a second season I’m sure Anthony isn’t slowing down anytime soon and I look forward to seeing more of his STYLd looks

Learn more about Anthony here Anthony L Williams and follow him on twitter @SewAnthony

Business Boot Camp- Philadelphia Enterprise Center

Posted by DeAnna on Jul 21, 2011 in Blog | One Comment

A few weeks ago The Commission (a group of talented business people) had the pleasure to speak at a Business Boot Camp, hosted by the Enterprise Center. This was an amazing experience because it was refreshing to see teenagers with such a hunger to be entrepreneurs. Many of them  had business plans in hand and were ready to launch their business. The Commission was bombarded with questions from the students about how to launch a business, what is the best part of being an entrepreneur, can I be your intern….and so much more. This is what I live for, to inspire others and help them to realize just how great they are. Checkout more photos from the Enterprise Center

Beauty 411 – What are you putting onto your body?

Posted by Diane on Jul 18, 2011 in Beauty, Blog, Health | No Comments

We all use beauty products day in and day out without realizing what we are putting onto and into our bodies. Because there are so many harmful chemicals in our moisturizers, face washes, shampoos, cosmetics, deodorants etc. I have chosen to go natural and/or organic in most of my beauty products.

Before I give you some fantastic natural products I have found, I have listed a few of the most dangerous chemicals you want to stay away from. Check your beauty products for the following:

Propylene Glycol:

  • Skin irritant – can cause dehydration and dermatitis
  • Causes kidney damage and liver abnormalities
  • Prematurely ages the skin (isn’t this what we are trying to avoid with our skin products!?)
  • Also found in antifreeze, household cleaners, adhesives

Parabens:

  • linked to organ system toxicity, cancer, and neurological and developmental disorders – disrupt hormonal balance
  • linked to many types of breast cancer – most breast cancer tumors are found to contain parabens – and prostate cancer

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate:

  • strips your natural moisture layer and can cause allergic reactions
  • can cause nitrates/nitrosamines in the body when combined with other chemicals which are cancer causing carcinogens
  • dangerous because it is so easily absorbed into the body through your skin

You must make your own decision about the daily products you use, however if you decide to go the natural route, the products below are a great place to start.

Acure Brightening Facial Scrub

Acure Day Cream Chamomile Carrot

Acure Firming Body Lotion Lemongrass Ginger

rms Lipshine

Morning Thoughts: Run Your World!

Posted by DeAnna on Jul 12, 2011 in Blog | 4 Comments

When I woke up Sunday, the morning after our Preview Event, I was overjoyed about life and the amazing people that I am surrounded by daily. I came across this photo (Marvin Burwell Photography) from our event and immediately got CHILLS! This photo is so powerful, not only because of the overflow of beauty, but  it shows that women can come together and support each other. Coming together more often will open the door for major change to take place in the world around us. Okay…you may say “I can’t change the world,” but I say you can change YOUR WORLD! As women we hold a lot of power, more than what we realize, so if we contribute that positive power to the people that surround us in our daily lives, change will start to happen. Each of us has a God given purpose on earth, if we all  tap into that purpose it wont be anything we cant do. Take control of YOUR WORLD, be the change you want to see. If you see another woman struggling or you know she can do better… help her be better. You see a need, meet it! This is the true meaning of  “Girls-Run The World,”  not about “in the club rockin the latest” and persuading  a man to do anything for you.

Leave a comment below letting us know how you RUN YOUR WORLD?  Then take it to twitter #RunYourWorld

Stay BE-YOU-tiful!

ASK D&D

Posted by DeAnna on Jul 10, 2011 in Blog, Fashion | No Comments

Q: When putting together a new wardrobe what are some pieces you must have? And how many to complete a new wardrobe?

A: When planning your wardrobe the most important items are essential pieces.

  1. Cardigans in many colors are always great because you can practically wear them over anything and they go from one season to the next.
  2. A pair of ballet flats
  3. Quality denim in styles that fit your body type
  4. Crisp white button-down shirt- this is definitely a classic. Now it comes in many different styles to make it look trendy.
  5. Basic black dress
  6. Trench Coat
  7. Tailored Blazer

You can never have too many basics. Start with neutral colors and build from there.
